Our Story
My name is Wade, and I am the creator of Mahurangi Memorials.
My father, Harold, had a long career as an "old school" traditional Cabinetmaker. At a young age, he enlisted my help with the family business. I spent hours watching him work after school, helping him produce beautiful bespoke furniture. Having shown a keen interest in woodworking, he introduced me to the lathe at age 10. I quickly became obsessed with the potential of the craft. The house became full of bowls, spinning tops and wooden toys.
After many years away, travelling the world with my music career, the first thing I bought for my workshop was a wood lathe. I have been enjoying getting back into the hobby.
During the last 5 years, I was asked to make cremation urns for family members and loved ones. Having made several different versions. I thought I'd try my luck at producing a modest range of urns as a side hustle.
I use a technique called "segmented woodturning". This way, I can recycle old, unwanted furniture into something useful. Creating urns from NZ native timbers.
Now going full circle, I've recently introduced my son to woodturning!
